Small Bathroom Design Ideas

When you are working with a small bathroom, try focusing on design ideas that either create more space or create the illusion of more space. The most popular ways to do this is with vanities, mirrors, and lighting. By using proper sizes and spacing techniques, you can have a small bathroom that is just as functional as a larger one.

Vanities: One of the best ways to use a vanity to maximize space in a small bathroom is to install a wall-mounted vanity. Choose a vanity with a lot of storage space underneath and that includes drawers. This will allow you to remove towel racks from the walls and either install them on the inside of the vanity doors or simply store the towels in a drawer. Another popular option for creating more floor space is to select a vanity that fits in the corner. That way it utilizes what would otherwise end up as wasted space.

If you prefer a floor standing vanity, choose a small vanity or even a small pedestal sink. To recreate the storage space lost by doing this, install recessed shelving. These options will create the storage space you need while creating the clean look of more floor space.

Mirrors: Although you cannot use mirrors to truly create more space, you can use them to create the illusion of more space. Correctly using mirrors can add length, depth and width to your small bathroom. There are several ways to do this. Use the largest mirror possible over your vanity to reflect as much of the room as possible. This will create the illusion of more depth in the room. If you have enough space to do so, you can put two smaller mirrors on opposite walls, with the mirrors facing each other. This creates the illusion that the room does not end. If your room has a shower, you could even replace the shower door with a mirrored door.

Lighting: Proper lighting can be accomplished with windows, light fixtures, or both. Be sure that, whatever lighting options you choose, all corners of the bathroom are well lit. Having dark corners causes the bathroom to appear smaller.

When you are deciding how to adorn the windows in your small bathroom, consider using sheer or lace curtains. This allows more light in, making the room seem larger. If privacy is a concern, then try replacing the glass in your bathroom windows with frosted, etched, or stained panels.

You can also use several techniques with light fixtures. Try installing a strip of lights above the main mirror; this will proved fantastic light and create the illusion of more space. Recessed can lighting is also good. By sinking the lighting into the walls and ceiling you will maximize your wall space for that less is more look. You do not have to feel cramped in your small bathroom anymore. Following the tips above can help you create a bathroom that feels and looks larger than it really is. Add space and give it your personal touch.

Bedroom Interior Design

When the weather turns for the worst, and the first signs of winter chill start to take hold, the miserable weather often inspires people to carry out some DIY in the house, and the very first thing that springs to mind is redecorating. Very often it is the bedroom that is first to get its makeover, but before deciding on the finer points of your interior designing efforts, some thoughts will have to be given to the furniture that will grace the finished room. Although choosing new furniture can be a difficult process, there are a few pointers you can follow that will make the whole thing a lot easier, helping you potentially get the very best out your newly designed and decorated bedroom.

One of the first things that need to be accomplished is the actual redecorating part. Although it may appear simpler to just buy everything you require, this is the boring way of doing things and it’s always better to learn a little about interior design beforehand. This is especially true if you want your bedroom to be stylish.

When it comes to choosing the new colour of your bedroom, pay no attention to “what is in” at the moment.

Choose colours based on your own particular preferences. Darker colours are ideal for those who prefer a warm, cozy feel to the room, although smaller rooms do not really benefit from being dark. If you still prefer a darker colour for a room that is small, then maybe paint only the one wall this colour, making it a feature wall.

When choosing the furniture you do not want to make the mistake of having a beautifully designed room but not so nice furniture plonked into the middle of it. Think about where you will want everything placed before you start purchasing what you require. This planning in advance can save a lot of future hassle. The biggest part of a bedroom is obviously going to be the bed, so getting this right is extremely important. Maybe you can pick the bed you require first, and then base everything else in the room around this? That includes both the interior design aspect of things, and the rest of the furniture. Oftentimes you can get a lot of inspiration by doing it this way.

Following on from this, it just doesn’t make sense to design a room first and then add a particular piece of furniture you’ve had your eye on, only to find out they match horribly! Make sure you really know what you want before you start, make some forward planning and then you can rest assured that everything will fall into place nicely for you.

These condos and lofts can be used not only for recreation, but also for work. Well, it is not a secret that these people also work. And they work a lot more than others. Indoor Floor Fountains

As far as the indoor floor fountains are concerned, these are quite famous and you can see it being kept in the corner of a reception area or dividing two rooms. Generally the reception area is being separated from the rest of the office with the help of the floor fountains. They are quite beautiful and are in great demand. The stainless steel framing and base is being used for this purpose. However it comes in many designs.

They resemble the modern world. The silver colored glass which is used as the backdrop is definitely quite beautiful and let me tell you one thing that you can keep it in any corner of your office or house. Generally we keep it in the drawing room or the living room. Some people are so found of the fountains that they keep it even in their bedrooms.

Why not we can use them at any place and still they will look good. One of the best usages of the floor fountain is in reception area. Generally if the owner has less space then he asks the designer to design the office. It is definitely neither possible nor correct decision to make the walls wherever we like. Generally we can build a big hall with pillars and then divide the whole space with something. The double sided floor fountain is quite handy in this case.

Many people think that the fountains are just for luxuries. However, you will have to realize that there are many benefits as well. Those who are health conscious can understand how important it is to have it in a garden. There are many designs which you can use in the garden. One such design is the angelic frog fountains. This is a three tier water fountain. It has two frogs at the second tier. You can keep it at any place in the garden. These types of designs are quite great for the heart patients. They provide the highest level of relaxation.

You can change the design according to yourself as well. You can ask the designer to use the peacock instead of the frog. You can also use a pair of duck. If you want to know more then you can go through the history books. I would advice you to go through the roman civilization as well as some of the dynasty of the United Kingdom.

Let me tell you one thing that the indoor floor fountains are definitely quite great for decoration purposes. Hence, I really feel that you should definitely use this in your house and office.

Floor Tile Design

If one goes to a trip inside a house, the first thing that he will see is the floor. Once he takes his first step, he looks at the floor and nothing more. The difference is, if the flooring is not impressive, then the visitor will never notice it, but if the floor is filled with a wonderful array of tile designs, it’s going to leave a good impression on the mind of the visitor.

If he goes to the kitchen, the presence of good tiles will also be the first thing that he will notice. It’s not the pans nor the oven, nor the refrigerator, it’s the counter-top. If he goes to the bathroom to relieve himself, we’re pretty sure that he will definitely notice the tiles, if there are any.

Tiles are wonderful house ornaments which exist for the function of accentuating the beauty of one’s home. Tiles also have a purpose, and they are chosen according to where they are going to be put and how they are going to be used.

Types of Tiles

There are thousands of different types and styles of tiles. This is because tiles are used practically everywhere, not only in the house but in other structures as well. There are the common stock tiles which one can find in any common folk’s kitchen or bathroom. There are the higher-end ceramic tiles which are used in a more decorative fashion. There are also the stone tiles which come in different materials such as granite, marble or slate. Some tiles are mass produced and some are hand-made. The hand-painted tiles are usually the most expensive ones because they are made with a specific design which caters to a specific type of consumer.

Natural tiles (which are made from either stone or ceramic) will project a certain level of exquisiteness. These tiles are usually priced more expensively. They are very resilient and durable. The downside is that everything that falls into the tiles will certainly break most of the times because of the structural soundness of these tiles. They also keep the coldness of the environment which can be a downside in cold areas.

Different tiles are installed in different places according to their resilience, beauty and durability. There are tiles which are more suitable for flooring, there are those which are suitable for kitchen tops and those which are more suitable for the bathrooms. Diversity and combination are key things toward putting up a great tile design.

Installing Tiles

When installing tiles, it’s important to take note of the kind of tile you are using and the location where it is going to be put. Different materials entail different procedures and tools for installation. Often times, the specific instructions are given by the manufacturer, but to be sure, always ask the sales person regarding the specifics of the installation procedures.

There are several tools that one needs to have to be able to properly and cleanly install tiles. For the more advanced tile enthusiasts, having tile nippers, tile cutters and trowels would be good. Remember that installing tiles in flat surfaces is the key, however, curved surfaces can also be covered with tiles if needed. Remember that when purchasing tiles, always get some extra tiles because accidents will happen and some of the tiles will get broken. The law of averages also applies to tile installation.

Designing through Tiles

If you are thinking about installing tiles in a certain area of your house, a good practice is to make an illustration of the area. The dimensions of the area in the illustration should be proportional to the dimensions of the area. The area should be divided into the dimensions that would be proportionate to the tiles that you are going to use. This way, you can clearly see how each tile would fit into the specified area and you can estimate how many tiles you are going to buy. Don’t forget to include the buffer tiles in case some of them break.

Also make sure that the color of the tiles that you are going to use would match that of the rest of the area. The tiles need not to be of one-color only. One can mix and match as long as he knows that the colors will match.

Tiles greatly accentuate the beauty of one’s home. Whether they are placed in the floor, in the kitchen or elsewhere, proper preparation and installation of these tiles will definitely mark up the value of one’s home.

Modern Bathroom Ideas

From sleek wall-hung bathroom furniture and spa baths to colour therapy lighting and sound systems, there’s more choice than ever before when designing a bathroom. For this reason, it’s a good idea to involve the professionals. If you’re planning a bathroom from scratch, or you are going to reconfigure the plumbing and drainage of the existing room, then it’s best to employ a designer as there will be structural and practical considerations, especially if you want a wet room. Specialist bathroom showrooms, such as Original Bathrooms, Ripples and CP Hart, provide designers and can organise installation too.

The DIY stores, such as B&Q and Wickes, can offer in-store planning, but advice is generally limited to the layout of basic elements, rather than providing solutions to problems. When buying for your bathroom, take along a plan of the room, with the existing fittings marked, and make sure you know the location and type of water-heating system you have, so that the shop can help you choose the most appropriate fittings.

Basins The latest basins are wide, shallow designs, sometimes even irregular in shape. These can be inserted into a slab-type work surface, wall-mounted with shelves and towel storage below, or installed as part of a basin unit. Conversely, deeper, rounder shapes set into slab worktops are also popular. Teamed with dark wood or lacquered white cabinets, shiny chrome taps and matching accessories, they can add a witty touch to an otherwise understated bathroom.

Baths Baths are usually the focal point of a bathroom, and there is a huge choice. Modern roll-top styles, often mounted in a cradle or on blocks, are designed to sit in the centre of a large room, while non-freestanding designs will need to be set into a surround finished with tiles or timber. New materials for baths include stone, cast-stone composites and even wood. For a larger bath, check that your hot-water system has the extra capacity needed. You should think carefully before opting for a shower instead of a bath, as it may decrease the re-sale value of your property.

Furniture Modern fitted bathroom furniture is often in dark wood, such as ebony, mahogany or wenge, which contrast well with white sanitaryware and chrome or stainless-steel bathroom fittings.

Walls Where walls and flooring are concerned, there’s still a strong trend for tiles, with limestone or porcelain lookalike tiles very popular. To avoid a bland look you can add bands of colour to break up plain tiles. Fully tiled walls tend to suffer from condensation unless the room is well heated. To solve the problem make sure your room has adequate ventilation; a heated towel rail and underfloor heating will also help. You can update your bathroom simply by swapping an outdated pedestal basin for a chic modern one with an integral stand.

Brassware If your bath and basin are understated, then bold, angular brassware will create several focal points. Many ranges have satin and matt finishes, sometimes in nickel, which will provide a softer look. The trend is for taps to be arched and graceful and showerheads as large as possible, especially in a wet room, to give you a good drenching. Remember that hard water causes shiny brassware to mark and dull quite badly, and be prepared to dry and buff the taps regularly. Take advice when choosing brassware, too, as products vary in suitability for high- or low-pressure water heating systems.

Wet Rooms and Steam Cabinets The most desirable types of showers around at the moment are wet rooms. If you wish to use the whole bathroom, then it has to be lined with a waterproof membrane, which usually costs at least £2,000. Do take professional advice, as there are many points to consider, from the capacity of the drainage system to the rate of water flow and recovery. You could opt for a semi-wet room, or a walk-in shower; this will be spacious but with fewer technical considerations. Semi-wet rooms still involve extensive waterproofing of part of the room, while glass panels are used to screen off the rest of the room and contain the spray. Walk-in shower enclosures consist of a tray and side/front panels, but are without a fully closing door – the walk-in area serves as a drying-off space. The latest have frameless glass panels and recessed trays to create a wet-room look.

If a wet room is not for you, and you have the budget and the space, you could create a spa-like bathroom with a steam cabinet. Fully enclosed with a roof, these contain a steam generator and usually a seat. Chromatherapy (colour therapy) is also included in some models. If the bathroom doesn’t have the space for a separate shower, look at the range of over-bath showers/steam cabinets from Jacuzzi – some models offer whirlpool bath options as well.

Ceiling-mounted shower fittings, along with body jets, are de rigueur in a wet room. If you want to install a new shower into an existing enclosure, or over the bath, consider a shower panel, such as one from Triton, which includes a fixed showerhead plus a hand-held spray and various body jets. Aqualisa offers remote-controlled showers, which can be switched on before entering the enclosure; the Grohe Wireless shower can be switched on or off from any room in the house.

Odd Shaped Window

Check this out to get some practical window treatment ideas for your own home. Guides to the do’s and dont’s. They should give you some food for thought before you leap in and get started. (The other option…brick your window up and have done with it. What do you think?)

Answers to a Tall and Narrow window?

My window treatment ideas for this kind of window. Set the curtains wider than you would normally. This gives the illusion of a wider window. Make the rod or track around 30cm wider each side of your window. Rather than the usual 20cm. Then when you open your curtains don’t push them back as far as you would normally.

Wide window causing a problem?

Window treatment ideas for this kind of window are to not set the curtains to wide off the window. Probably only 15cm at most. Even though you have a lot of fabric to stack back when they open. You can use tie backs to hold them off the window. Another option is to use a thinner fabric.

Another thing that works well to give the window height is a valance or pelmet. Only rather than the usual 20cm depth make it 30 -35cm deep and fix it higher on the wall. So with the curtains not set to wide and a deeper top treatment this gives the illusion of a squarer window.

The dreaded arched windows!

Best window treatment ideas for arched windows. Most folks find this style of window a real pain.

It can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.

The easiest thing to do is so simply fit a curtain rod straight across over the window and hang a pair of curtains. Just simply treat it like any other window.

If you want to work with the shape (talk about making life hard for yourself) and have curved top curtains that drapes back into tie backs, then this what you must do. On the width measure every 15cm across the window put markers on the window sill. Then note the full window width.

Next measure and make a note of both outside straight edges up to where the arch starts. Finally at each of the markers on your window sill measure straight up from the sill to where the tape measure touches the curve. make a note for a these vertical measurements. It’s a good idea to make a quick sketch of the window and jot your sizes next to the places where you measured.

If someone is making the curtains for you just give them the sizes as measured. If your having a go at making yourself then (take a tranquilizer) you need to multiply all your width sizes by 2.5 to allow for gather.

What to do with a door curtain!

Window treatment ideas for doors. Normally you would have a single curtain drawing back to the hinge side of your door. It makes a lot of sense to have the curtain tied back. (otherwise your door curtain will end up flapping like supermans cape every time someone opens the door on a windy day)

Sometimes there is not enough room on the hinge side of the door for the curtain to stack back off the door properly. You can have the curtain draw back the opposite way as long as you have room to draw the curtain completely clear of the door.

If you only have a small space on the hinge side of your door and no room the other side. Then the best option is to have an eyelet curtain on a rod with 1.5 X width of the door. This will stack back into a very small space.

Kitchen window Ideas

Window treatment ideas for kitchens. Your over sink curtains should be a few cm’s short of the work surface even if this means just reaching the window sill. Also generally tied back to avoid splashes. (your kitchen floor will still end up flooded when the kids wash up after dinner, but at least your curtains should stay dry)

Another suggestion is don’t use curtains and if you need privacy then fit a roller blind with moisture resistant fabric.

Another thing to consider if you really do want curtains is having unlined curtains made of a good polycotton fabric. This will enable you to launder your curtains whenever they get cooking smells on them.

Great Ideas for you bathroom

Window treatment Ideas for your bathroom. If you have a window over a bath or shower. Then don’t bother with curtains full stop. It will be a complete waste of time and effort.

Really the only practical thing to do is fit a roller blind with a moisture resistant fabric.

If your window is away from the bath or shower then go for it and have some curtains. Even still keep them short and have them unlined. also pick a fabric that will launder well and dry well if they become damp with steam in the bathroom. Polycotton fabric are very good for this.

One last idea is to have a polyester sheer curtain on a rod drawn right across your window and scooped back into a hold back arm that matches your curtain rod. Dressed properly this can look very soft and feminine. Whilst giving you some privacy.

Patio doors and French doors!

Window treatment ideas for patio and French doors. these are great windows to have allowing lots of light into your room.

One of the drawbacks can be lack of privacy on occasion, or the sun maybe a problem.

An easy way to solve this is to fit a sheer curtain on its own rail fixed in the window recess behind your proper curtains. You can then open and close them to suit.

Panel track blinds a really great idea for large windows like this. They are very modern and contemporary. They can be opened and closed by moving the panels by hand or by pulling a cord. Just like a standard corded curtain rail.

The proper panel tracking system is a fairly pricey piece of kit. There are other ways of getting a similar look. I am sorting out some info on this and will put a new article out very soon

I hope this helps you with your “odd” shaped window.
